OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP TRACK

The Outdoor Leadership Track is a semester-long program designed to provide students with an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, gain an appreciation with natural history and the outdoors, and learn how to be come an advocate for a sustainable world. This track will include field trips and special events that will assist students in understanding important environmental issues that affect our communities. In addition, participants will attend regular group meetings to prepare for a 3 day outdoor backcountry expedition. The expedition will provide opportunities for students to utilize the challenges of wilderness travel to develop greater levels of self-confidence and an understanding of leadership.

As a member of the Outdoor Leadership Track, students will:

  • Learn foundational leadership theories and practices
  • Engage in personal reflection and peer-to-peer dialogue about ones leadership development
  • Learn and practice safety and outdoor technical skills such as basic Wilderness First Aid, using a compass, map reading, trip planning, backcountry cooking, packing techniques, and minimum impact camping
  • Learn and practice outdoor ethics such as the Leave No Trace philosophy
  • Define environmental sustainability
  • Develop an appreciation for natural history and the outdoors, and learn about how to become an advocate for the environment
