Starting a New ClubWHERE TO BEGINReview the eight types of clubs at NYU described below to determine the criteria for the type of club you propose to start and follow the distinct instructions for starting that type of club.TYPES OF CLUBS AT NYUThere are eight (8) different types of student clubs and organizations at New York University: All-Square Clubs, School Clubs, Office Clubs, Sport Clubs, Theme-based Event Planning Committees, Fraternities and Sororities, Student Councils, and Umbrella Organizations.Fraternities and Sororities are those student organizations that are recognized as member organizations in the Inter-Greek Council. Member organizations include those fraternities and sororities who are recognized by the Inter-Fraternity Council, Pan-Hellenic Council, or Multi-Cultural Greek Council. Their funding comes from membership and ASSBAC, their advisor is affiliated with the Office of Student Activities (OSA), and IGC, IFC, MGC, PHC, OSA, SAB, and ASSBAC as well as their national organizations govern them. (Honorary fraternities and sororities are generally affiliated with a school, college or academic program and may register with OSA as School Clubs after being fully recognized by a school, college or academic department at NYU.) To start a Social Fraternity or Sorority, contact the Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority life in the Office of Student Activities, Kimmel Center, Suite 704. 212-998-4710 or osa.fsl@nyu.edu for social fraternities and sororities. (Students wanting to start an honorary society with academic membership restrictions, should contact the Dean's office of the school that the honorary would affiliate with.) School Clubs are those student organizations that are affiliated with a particular school, college, or academic department and whose principle mission or purpose is related and/or directed to the students of that school, college or academic department. Their funding comes from the school or college, their advisor is affiliated with the school or college, and the school or college governs them. To start a School Club, contact the student government of the school the club would affiliate with. For a directory go to: http://www.nyu.edu/pages/stugov/councils.html Theme-based Event Planning Committees are those student organizations whose principle mission or purpose is the coordination of month-, week-, or day-long events centered around a common theme by bringing together a cross-section of student organizations (registered with OSA) and students. Their funding comes from the All-Square Student Budget Allocation Committee, their advisor is affiliated with the Office of Student Activities (OSA), and SAB, ASSBAC and OSA govern them. There is a first year probationary period for new committees that must be successfully completed before receiving All-Square status from SAB and funding from ASSBAC. To start a Theme Week & Month Planning Committee, contact the Associate Director of Student Activities, Kimmel Center, Suite 704. 212-998-4165 or osa@nyu.edu Umbrella Organizations are those student organizations (registered with OSA) whose principle mission or purpose is to bring together a cross-section of OSA registered student organizations that share a common purpose or interest. Their funding comes from the All-Square Student Budget Allocation Committee, their advisor is affiliated with the Office of Student Activities (OSA), and SAB, ASSBAC and OSA govern them. There is a first year probationary period for new Umbrella Organizations that must be successfully completed before receiving All-Square status from SAB and funding from ASSBAC. To start an Umbrella Organization, contact the Associate Director of Student Activities, Kimmel Center, Suite 704. 212-998-4165 or osa@nyu.edu Sport Clubs are non-collegiate student organizations affiliated with the Coles Sports and Recreation Center who are officially recognized as a student sport club by Coles. Their funding comes from Coles, their advisor is affiliated with Coles, and Coles governs them. To start a Sports Clubs, review the "Policy Handbook for Club Sports" at http://www.nyu.edu/athletics/clubs/ and follow the instructions outlined in the Handbook. Office Cubs are those student organizations that are affiliated with a particular administrative office, department, or center and whose principle mission or purpose is related to the mission or purpose of the office, department or center. Their funding comes from the office, department or center, their advisor is affiliated with the office, department or center, and the office, department or center governs them. To starting an Office Club, contact the administrative staff of the office the club would affiliate with. All-Square Clubs are those student organizations that have been granted All-Square status by the Student Activities Board (SAB) and have properly registered with the Office of Student Activities, have four fully matriculated student officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) who are in good standing with the University, have successfully completed the OSA New Club Development Program (if applicable), have a membership that includes students from several schools or colleges of the University, have at least ten (10) fully matriculated student members who are in good standing with the University, have no more than two-thirds (2/3) of its membership from one school or college of the University, maintain a visible impact on campus, have a stated principle or mission which concerns a cross-section of students and is not directed to the students of one school, college or academic department, demonstrate that they will serve a purpose or provide a service which is not performed by an existing student organization (or academic or administrative office). Their funding comes from the All-Square Student Budget Allocation Committee, their advisor is affiliated with the Office of Student Activities (OSA), and SAB, ASSBAC and OSA govern them. The Student Activities Board (SAB), a student government board responsible for recognizing and governing All-Square clubs at NYU, has created the New Club Development (NCD) Program to assist groups of students wanting to start an All-Square club. To start an All-Square Club, click on "New Club Development (NCD) Program Application" and complete and submit the on-line application form by the last Friday in September. Forms will go directly to the SAB members who will contact the founding members of your proposed club by October 15 regarding the status of your application. The SAB is solely responsible for selecting proposed clubs seeking acceptance to the New Club Development (NCD) Program and recognition as an All-Square club at NYU. Student Councils are the elected student governing/representative bodies of an individual school or college recognized by the school or college for that purpose, or the Inter-Greek Council (IGC) or the Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC), Off-Campus Student Council (OCSC), University Committee on Student Life (UCSL) or the Student Senators Council (SSC). Their funding comes from the school, college or administrative unit they are affiliated with and their advisor is affiliated with their school, college or administrative unit. The councils are self-governed. The starting of any new student government body requires approval by the existing councils.
