NYU Civic Team

The NYU Civic Team bridges social justice and civic engagement in an effort to develop a team of students as social advocates within their communities on various levels. Through policy and advocacy trainings, students will develop a keen awareness and understanding of the interconnectedness of different players within society. They will learn how to create sustainable change across all spectrums from grassroots and community-based initiatives to governmental and policy driven initiatives.

The NYU Civic Team will provide opportunities for students to learn about societal issues from diverse perspectives. This team will bring advocates from different arenas together to engage in conversations, trainings, planning sessions, and service. Students will have the opportunity to intern or volunteer at a non-profit organization throughout New York City or intern at a government agency within the New York City Government.

With a membership of over 250, the Civic Team provides greatly needed support to non-profit agencies serving at-risk youth, underserved communities, senior citizens, homebound elderly, and homeless New Yorkers. They also provide support services to government offices relating to education and social welfare services.

The idea of a volunteer "team" is central to the success of this group. Together with staff from the Office of Student Activities and the staff at the participating agencies, Civic Team members make a significant contribution to their community. Recruitment meetings are held twice per year, in the first few weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters.

Over the past 20 years over 5,000 Civic Team volunteers has have provided crucial services to the NYU community.
